Heavy oils and butters - Castor oil, Almond oil, olive oil, shea butter, kokum butter to name a few. These oils and butters have a high density, which means they will probably weigh your hair down in the hotter months. They are great in sealing and penetrating the hair, but in humid climates they may weigh the hair down, depending on your texture.
Sealing the hair can be optional in the hotter months because your hair is drawing in moisture instead of losing moisture (which is what the cold air does), so any kind of oil can be used very sparingly in the summer.
Deep Conditioning - although you don’t have to completely rid deep conditioning, it doesn’t have to be a weekly thing. You can get away with doing it once a month.
Items to keep…
Co-wash - In the summer you don’t have to be highly concerned with shampoo, especially if you are not using a lot of oils, and butters. Having a co wash handy is perfect because in the summer you tend to do a lot of wash and gos, hang out on the beach, be lazy and free. We tend to want to wet our hair everyday in the summer, and if that is so, you do not want to use a shampoo everyday. A good co wash will get the job done in cleaning the scalp but leaving all the good stuff behind. Clarifying the hair can be done monthly as well.
Leave in- The perfect leave in is a leave in you can do everything with. With a leave in, you can do a twist out or wash and go and your hair remains super soft. In the summer you should be able to have one styler on deck and use that for everything; the L.O.C method is kind of the thing to do in the colder months, so feel free to use one product. See, one product for your styling pleasure, what I said in the beginning :)
And that is it for items to keep. Seriously, it is that simple. Don’t overthink your summer hair care regimen. The reason it is so simple and you can reduce what you put on your hair is because in the summer the air gives you moisture. If you put a whole lot of stuff on your hair it will become weighed down and frizzy a lot of the time because the hair cannot take in so much. The summer gives you new life and freedom, take what it gives for free!
Product suggestions; Chocolate Souffle, Lovely Curl Spray, and Curlicue Revival Gel-Cream are all good standalone products, they can be used by themselves. They are very good products to be used in the summer as your leave in and styler. Depending on your hair needs each one has it’s own benefit. Divine Elegance Co- wash is a fantastic co wash that will softly clean the hair but not take all the good stuff away. Citrus Burst Clarifying Shampoo, can be used monthly to get hair back to proper pH and deep clean the hair and scalp.
As always, it is a pleasure...Don’t forget to smile :)
