Many times people apply the hot oil treatment right before they wash. You feel as if it is a good time to do it, it works almost like a pre-treatment, right? No, it is quite different from a pre treatment. Your hot oil treatment is for mainly one reason, moisture! Your tresses are dry, lifeless, no luster at all, and not to mention your scalp. For this reason I wouldn’t want to let this be my first step, why?
You are putting the oil on top of already used hair; product build up, dirt, environmental pollution and the such, so adding oil to this will not benefit ones hair as much. For hot oil treatments you want full penetration into the scalp and hair. You get the maximum benefit when hair and scalp has been cleansed, plus you are not washing away the oil that you want to stay on your scalp and hair.
When should you apply the hot oil?
Right after you wash, and before your deep condition. Apply, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, rinse, (the water will not fully saturate the hair due to the oil, which is good). Once you rinse apply the deep conditioner (the application of the deep conditioner will be really smooth). Rinse and apply leave in. Your hair will be awesomely moisturized! You can also put the hot oil treatment on after the deep conditioner, instead of before, put a plastic cap on, sit for 15 minutes rinse and then proceed to apply leave in. This is if your hair is super dry and you need all the moisture you can get. Otherwise your hair may end up heavy.
Note: A pre treatment is to prep your hair before the rigorous washing experience. It helps to strengthen, detangle, lift dead scalp follicles and the such. It also helps to give your hair a little moisture before washing.
