Love Thy Tresses!
Over the years the talk has kind of calmed down about nasty ingredients in products. And so when things are not talked about anymore, we kinda get back into our normal habits and get back to the status quo.
But, with us being a natural company it is always at the top of our mind. We are always thinking about nasty ingredients and making sure our products are the most safe ever, for you and child.
I feel like I still need to bring the topic to top of mind so we don’t forget. For this reason, let’s talk about sulfates, parabens and mineral oil, and why we shouldn’t use them.
Sulfates are detergents, cleansers. They clean the hair. A sulfate in general, is a natural occuring substance, but when they are paired with other things they become unnatural and toxic. The toxicity comes from the MFG process, which cause a toxin to be introduced which is called dioxin. Something found in pads and tampons that are severely toxic to our bodies (cancer causing). These pairings are SLS - Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and SLES - Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate, and some other combinations These things gives the bubbles and lather in shampoos, toothpaste and household cleaners. They cause irritation to eyes, skin and lungs. When using these things in your hair products and or face wash they will cause severe drying. Your curls will be fried, and you haven’t even put heat on them. Do not use!
Parabens are inexpensive preservatives. They prevent bacteria growth. Common ones are as follows; butylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben. The thing about parabens is that they release a substance called xenoestrogens, when these get into your bloodstream, they cause an estrogen disruption. This has been linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues.
Mineral Oil is an inexpensive byproduct in refining crude oil to make gasoline and other petroleum products. Mineral oils are used in hair products to trap moisture in. It forms a layer in the hair giving the illusion of health. The hair shines and looks smooth and sleek. Just think of vaseline. When you apply it to your baby's bottom so that they will not get a rash, it doesn’t really moisturize but it does block out moisture effectively. The problem with mineral oil is that it does not provide any benefits to the hair or skin other than trapping in moisture. But it also makes sure moisture cannot get in. And it is very difficult to wash the oil off the hair and skin for that matter. Once it gets trapped in the pores it will cause dryness to the hair, skin and even cause acne if put on the face.
When applying this substance to the scalp you are clogging your pores, not allowing your natural sebum production, which in turn will cause dandruff and will stunt your hair growth. When applied to the hair, it locks in any moisture and prevent moisture from getting in, which in the long run will make your curls really dry because moisture will sit on top of it when you try to reapply. People love mineral oil when wearing hair straight because as mentioned, it gives the illusion of health. It is also a good protective against heat damage. But while you may be protecting against heat, it will cause other damage to the tresses by one not getting enough moisture to the hair.
In order to wash mineral oil out you cannot use a natural shampoo. You have to use a sulfate cleanser. That is the only thing that can strip that residue from your strands. And then the cycle continues; dry hair, dry scalp, stunted hair growth.
Of course we can’t protect our self from everything. It’s all around us and we have to live. We can’t be afraid of everything. But some things can be avoided. And these are the things that can be avoided.
